Frequently asked questions

These are the questions we hear most often about Fibertop®. If you would like to speak to someone about Fibertop®, please call us at 905-203-0816 or email sales@fibertop.ca.

Fibertop® is an impact absorbing, recreational surfacing product comprised of 100% natural wood fibre best used in conjunction with a companion filtering and drainage system.

Fibertop® produces impressively high performance results on impact attenuation tests making it one of the highest performance systems available. Fibertop’s wood fibres naturally knit together forming a consistent layer accessible for persons using wheelchairs and other mobility devices. Fibertop systems install within hours minimizing disruption to play time and can even be installed by the do-it-yourselfer. Fibertop® is 100% Canadian and is backed by a comprehensive warranty when installed and maintained properly.

IPEMA, the International Play Equipment Manufacturers Association, provides 3rd party Product Certification services for US and Canadian public play equipment and surfacing materials. The services provide for the validation of a participant's certification of conformance to the latest standards. Both programs are administered by TÜV SÜD America Inc. Participation in IPEMA offers customer the assurance of product purity and product performance.

Yes. Fibertop® complies with CAN/CSA Z614 for impact attenuation. Fibertop® is an IPEMA certified product that is annually tested by TÜV SÜD America Inc. to meet ASTM F1292-09 (Fall Attenuation) and ASTM F2075-10a (Foreign Contamination and Hazardous Metals). Fibertop® is an accessible product and has been tested to meet the ASTM F1951-09b Standard for Accessibility of Surface Systems Under and Around Playground Equipment.

Fibertop® wear mats are made of high quality, recycled rubber with an integrated, recycled foam core, and are placed in areas where kick-out can occur such as slide exits and under swing seats. They can be buried in the wood fiber layer or placed on top. Optional anchoring kits are available.

While preserving impact attenuation they also act as an indicator to maintenance staff that raking or topping-up is required.

Mold and mildew are typically associated with poor playground drainage or locations with poor air circulation. Poor drainage is addressed by installing one of our drain systems:

  • Fibertop® Inground 612AD Aggregate Drain
  • Fibertop® Aboveground 612SD Strip Drain

We also recommend that the play area is maintained in such a way that sunlight and air circulation are prevalent.

Fibertop® 612 SD and 612 AD systems have an expected life span of for 25 years, provided installation, maintenance and drainage have been completed according to the system instructions provided.

After installation and compaction Fibertop® is virtually impossible to ignite as the matted consistency of Fibertop® lacks the oxygen content required to sustain fire.

Splinters are not a problem with Fibertop surfacing. Finer particles do not remain on top of the surface and therefore rarely come in contact with the skin. When contact with the finer particles occurs the material generally moves with the body and does not create sufficient pressure to result in a splinter.
